Welcome Back Panthers

  Dear Amherst Elementary Families:

Hello, my name is Jennifer Crews and I am excited to be your new Principal at Amherst Elementary for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. I hope that your families are enjoying the summer thus far, and everyone is looking forward to a positive school year. I am committed to partnering with everyone throughout the year to promote a successful learning environment for our children.

A letter will be sent out to parents/guardians about the new online registration process for the 2019-2020 school year. Please use that as a reference to register your student . If you have any additional questions  or concerns, please feel free to contact us at (434)946-9704. Open House will be held on Thursday August 8, 2019 from 1:00-7:00p.m. Please take a moment to stop by and meet with me and our new front office staff during this time.  We will have a transition day for Pre-K and K only on Tuesday August 13, 2019. If you have a student in one of those grade levels you should have an additional letter attached to provide further details about this opportunity.  The first day of school is Wednesday, August 14, 2019.

Our school day officially begins at 9:05 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. Car riders may begin to arrive at 8:30a.m. and report to the cafeteria. If your student is not eating breakfast, they may be dropped off at 8:45 a.m. and report to their classroom.  If a student arrives after the 9:05 a.m. start time, they will need to be escorted into the building by the adult who is dropping them off to sign the student in to the main office.

All car riders will need to be picked up by 4:00 p.m. daily. If something occurs and you may arrive after the designated pick up time, please contact our office so that we can make arrangements for your student.  The car rider drop off and pick up line area is located in front of the main doors. If you plan on walking up to pick up your student, please park in the lot next to the gym. Please do not drive into the bus loop area (ACPS Employee Parking Only Beyond This Point) during arrival and dismissal times for the safety of our students and staff.

If any changes in regards to transportation for your student need to be made, please send a note to school or fax/email the changes no later than 3:00 p.m. We cannot accept phone calls in place of these documents for transportation changes for the safety of our students. It is our priority to get our students home safely each day. You may fax (434)946-9706 or email esale@amherst.k12.va.us any requests to our secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Sale . In case of an emergency, please speak directly to Mrs. Sale or Mrs. Crews in regards to transportation needs for your student.

Throughout the year, we practice various drills including fire, lockdown, evacuation, and tornado drills to help us be as prepared as possible in case of actual emergencies. During September, we will have an evacuation drill whereby all students proceed to the upper playground. Please do not be alarmed if you happen to see us.

On the last Friday of each month, we have Hat Day for Charities. On those days, students may bring 25 cents to school and wear their hats during the school day. We donate that money to a local charity called, “Amherst Cares.”

It is a way for our students to have some fun and give back to their community as well. It is a privilege to work with your children each day. If I can ever be of assistance, please know my door is always open.
